Julie Enckell is a professor of art theory, author, editor, curator, and researcher. She holds a doctorate in art history (Lausanne, Poitiers) and a postgraduate certificate in curatorial studies from the HEAD–Genève. She studied in Paris and in Rome, where she was a member of the Swiss Institute. She then worked in museums, first as a curator of contemporary art and then as director of the Musée Jenisch Vevey (2013-2018). A specialist in graphic arts and author of several monographs on 20th and 21st-century artists, her recent research approaches 20th century art practices through the lens of women's agency: In Their Own Words with Federica Martini (completed), the educational paths of women artists between Geneva and Paris, 1880-1940 (in progress), Doing art history in Switzerland with a feminist perspective, with Sarah Burkhalter (in progress). Since 2023, Julie Enckell also co-directs the On Words collection of artist interviews with Sarah Burkhalter and Federica Martini.
