Out of Proportion

Krzysztof Kosciuczuk

Works in the visual arts enter and leave the field in a fairly relative manner, the field expands to include new practices and modes of image-making, to the extent that recent years have seen the emergence of companies whose sole aim is to create conditions for massive works, impossible to present otherwise, that are presented as “immersive” or “experiential”. But what happens if artists work across formats to create works that are seemingly incompatible with the conditions and context of their creation? We will look at moving image works that are more at home in many other places than in an art exhibition. We will also consider the implications and the impact of works that are meant to challenge their format by being out of proportion and examine if and how the choice of a format is enabling to perform identity.
